Hunts SSP Year 3/4 Mini Red Tennis Event – Tuesday 21st May 2019 (please select the morning or the afternoon event).
A key objective of the Year 3&4 Mini Tennis Red competition is to introduce new players to this great game and to offer these young people a positive experience in which they will be inspired to continue playing the sport in the future. The event is for young people who are beginners or are new to the game of mini tennis. Please note that the event is not for those who are regularly competing in Mini Tennis competitions outside of school.
To ensure that the Year 3/4 event is a positive experience for our young people this competition is not open to players with an Orange 2, Orange 1, or Orange 1* or Green Rating at the time of the Level 2 event. However, we would still encourage schools to involve these young players by giving them a role such as team captain or assistant coach. Ratings can be checked on the LTA website using name and year of birth, all schools should check eligibility of players before finalising their team selection.

Rules: Mini Tennis scoring and rules will be used. Players will play for a set period of time. The length of matches will depend on time available and number of entries. Matches will start at the sound of a whistle and last for a set period of time. Mini Tennis scoring does not use traditional tennis scoring (15, 30, 40 etc). Instead, simple numbered scoring is used, i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.
Teams will be made up of 4 players, 2 Boys and 2 Girls. Each match between two schools will consist of 4 separate games of singles – known as ‘rubbers’ i.e. Boy 1 v Boy 1 (most able Boy player from each team), Boy 2 v Boy 2, Girl 1 v Girl 1 (most able Girl player from each team), Girl 2 v Girl 2. Each player will be allocated with a ‘Player Label’ showing which ranking player they will be (i.e. Boy 1 / Boy 2). Players must remain in the same team and play in the same ranking order throughout the event.
Play: The serve is decided by a ‘toss’ at the start of the match. The nominated person will serve for the first point the service then alternates between players every 2 points. When serving, players should stand behind the baseline. When serving, the ball must not be bounced before being hit. The serve can be hit over or under arm. Serves should be hit diagonally, landing in the diagonally opposite service box. Each court will have a sports leader to umpire and call out the score. Sponge balls will be used if playing indoors, felt Mini Tennis Red Balls will be used if playing outdoors. Rackets no longer than 23” in length should be used.
