University of Cambridge and Westfield Junior School Triumph at U11 Pokémon Cup

Friday 27th January saw the County Finals of the English Schools Football Association (ESFA) U11 Girls and U11 Mixed Pokémon Cup for Cambridgeshire.

The morning event welcomed 8 schools from across Cambridgeshire to One Leisure St Ives Outdoor Centre. The schools were initially split into 2 groups, playing a round robin to determine group placings. The top 2 schools from each group progressed to the semi-finals with third and fourth place playing the equivalent placed schools from the other group.

The semi-finals saw Histon & Impington Brook Primary School play Westfield Junior School and St Andrews CofE Primary School play University of Cambridge Primary School. All the placing games were extremely close, with some fantastic goalkeeping and a single goal deciding each match!

The final was an another close affair with Westfield Junior School and University of Cambridge Primary School playing for the title of Cambridgeshire Pokémon Cup Winners.

Congratulations to University of Cambridge Primary School who piped Westfield 1-0 and now have the opportunity to represent Cambridgeshire at the ESFA Regional Finals in March. We wish them good luck and look forward to hearing how they get on.

It was a short journey to St Neots Town Football Club in the afternoon, for the Final of the Cambridgeshire ESFA U11 Mixed Pokémon Cup Final. The match saw Crosshall Junior School play Westfield Junior School, it what was another tight contest. Both teams threatened early in the game, before Westfield netted just before half-time to take a 1-0 lead. Crosshall Junior School started the second half strong, dominating possession and looking for an equaliser, however Westfield caught them on the break and calmly finished to make the game 2-0. Crosshall had a chance to get back into the game with a late penalty, but the ball struck the crossbar before being scrambled away on the rebound. Full Time 2-0.

Year 9 Sports Leaders from St Ivo Academy and Longsands Academy ably supported the finals, refereeing all matches with confidence.
